Welcome to Kumalu Dream Island, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Suriname’s pristine rainforest. Our eco-friendly lodge is located on the Upper Suriname River, where the Gran Rio and Pikin Rio merge, creating a vibrant backdrop for immersive cultural and nature experiences. Within Kumalu, we believe in celebrating the authentic rhythms of Surinamese life while preserving the natural beauty that surrounds us.
MEET GIO
Gio is not just the founder but the heart and soul behind Kumalu Dream Island. Born and raised in Suriname, Gio’s deep connection with the local culture and his passion for sustainable tourism inspired him to create a haven where visitors can experience the authentic rhythms of the rainforest.
With a background in hospitality and community development, Gio envisioned Kumalu as a place that nurtures both nature and cultural heritage. His commitment to eco-friendly practices and his respect for the traditions of the Maroon communities are evident in every aspect of the lodge—from its immersive cultural activities to its sustainable operations.
Our history
Kumalu: The name
The island is named after the Kumalu, a popular fish that lives in the river. The name Kumalu is derived from Saamáka, the language of the Maroon population that lives in the area.
Kumalu has long been a popular destination for tourists who want to experience the nature and culture of Suriname. The island offers a unique combination of untouched nature, traditional culture and adventurous activities.
Where & why
Kumalu is located in the habitat of the Saramaccans in the Sipaliwini District, descendants of escaped slaves who settled in the Surinamese rainforest in the 17th and 18th centuries.
This small green island with a diverse flora and fauna is surrounded by the Pikin Rio with its many rapids.
This population group has maintained its own unique culture and traditions, which is experienced in a trip to Kumalu Dream Island.

wHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT KUMALU

Kumalu was in 1 woord geweldig en dat is nog zacht uitgedrukt. Als je houd van spanning en avontuur, is this the place to be. De reis naar het eiland zelf is al een hele belevenis. Je kijkt letterlijk je ogen uit je lijf zo mooi zijn de plekken waar je voorbij komt. Er is genoeg te doen zoals zwemmen in de rivier, de ananasberg beklimmen, boswandelingen, de waterval bezoeken, nacht spotten en nog veel meer. Door de Gio (de gids) heb ik mij geen moment onveilig gevoeld in de jungle, het is fascinerend hoeveel kennis hij bezit over de wild life van Suriname. Ook de catering was top. We werden goed verzorgd door Benny (de kok) met minimaal 3 maaltijden per dag uit de Surinaamse keuken. Dankjewel team Kumalu. Ik heb intens genoten, tot ziens en soso lobi.

Kumalu is een geweldige plek in boven Suriname. De dagelijkse leiding is in handen van Gio. Gio is naast een goede leider van Kumalu ook een geweldige gastheer. Hij kent de omgeving op zijn duimpje en heeft een goed contact met de locale bevolking. Hij is een groot kenner van de flora en fauna en herkent de meeste vogels aan hun geluid. Wanneer je met hem op de boot vaart of in het bos wandelt ben je met een geweldige gids op stap. Een verblijf op Kumalu zorgt voor een onvergetelijke beleving van boven Suriname.
Itske en Koos
Wij zijn een aantal keer met Gio naar Kumalu geweest en hebben iedere keer erg genoten! De reis naar Kumalu is al een mooie ervaring; eerst met de auto vanaf de stad en daarna door met de boot. Bij Kumalu slaap je in verschillende huisjes en wij hebben ook nog een nacht in hangmatten in het bos geslapen verder de rivier op. Daar was er ook de mogelijkheid om dieren te spotten en te vissen. We hebben oa een labaria, luiaard, anaconda, toekans, brulapen en zelfs een harpij-arend gezien.
